BJORK

The Greatest cardboard flattening Swedish inspired phone stand. EVER.
University Year 1
Project Overview
This project was completed in my first year at Carleton University studying Industrial Design. The goals of the project were to design and create a cardboard phone stand that held the phone four inches off of the surface it was resting on. Easy right? Until we were told we were not allowed any adhesives, the only way we could fasten the pieces together would be a type of joint made from the material. Oh, and the phone stand had to be portable, aka could disassemble by hand and fold flat. Also, someone had to assemble it alone with not help or written step by step. So quickly this "simple project" was no longer so "simple".
Primary Learnings
Sketch, sketch, and a few more sketches.
Since this was my first major project in my post secondary career I was not as experienced in the strategies and process of product design.
Therefore I focused towards generating as many designs as possible in order to develop not only a large number of designs, but also to determine and resolve future issues.

Year One
Sept 2019 - April 2020
The phone stand was restricted to only being able to use cardboard and elastic bands. Thus no adhesive could be used to secure pieces together.

Many design iterations and testing went into generating the final design. A primary focus was to determine the strongest shapes and connection joints.
